Rudolph
Rudolph is Santa Claus' 9th
reindeer.
Rudolph is the son of Donner (one of
Santa's other
reindeer), and was born with a glowing
red nose. His nose initially made him unpopular with the other
reindeer, until it saved the day one
Christmas.
Apparently, one Christmas Eve, it
was so foggy that
Santa Claus was unable to see properly
to fly his sleigh. Fortunately
Rudolph's nose was so bright, that
Santa Claus was able to use it as a
makeshift light to guide him, and since that year Rudolph has helped pulled
sleigh each year.
The Rudolph story was first documented in a verse written by Robert L. May
in 1939 for the Montgomery Ward chain of department stores.
The story was so popular that it has been retold in many forms including
a popular song, a TV special and even a movie.
